Work and Family Life Balance and Career Development of women employees
As most of the women have to perform dual roles in family and work place, due to several reasons they are unable to fulfill their responsibilities properly. This has affected to their career development ultimately. Work-life balance has always been a concern of those interested in the quality of working life and its relation to broader quality of life.
Greenhaus and Beutel (l985), wrote one of the earliest theoretical articles on work-family conflict. They defined work-family conflict as a type of inter-role conflict where work and family roles are incompatible and seen as competing for an individual’s time, energy, and behaviors on and off the job. Career development of men and women was equally affected by family to work conflict. Understanding the type, direction, and source of the conflict can help organizations and managers design appropriate workplace interventions to support work-family balance (Buddapriya, 2009).
The main differentiating supporting factor for professional women is the support and involvement of their husbands with regards to both their careers and the family and homemaking. Following external variables are supportive for working women
· Societal views and attitudes - The views
and attitudes of society regarding the role of women are important in this
discussion.
· Support structures - The existence and
extent of support structures are instrumental in the experience of
life-balance.
· Organizational values and support
Career Development
The term career means the unfolding sequence of a person’s work experiences over time. When understanding career development, it can be break down in to two as career management and career planning.
· Career management - Career management can be defined as a self-monitored life long process of getting to choose your goals, setting them and formulating strategies to achieve them.
· Career Planning -This aims at matching the career goals of an individual with the available opportunities.
From organization’s point of view, career development means matching the career goals of the employees with the present and future needs and goals of the organization.
How to manage Work and Family Life Balance and Career Development of women employees
· Training and Development Programs - Organization`s must help to avoid the individual barriers such as lack of confidence etc. by arranging the training and development programs.
· Time management was the biggest challenge - To avoid these organizations can help with the female workers by offering day care centers, giving flexible work hours.
· Fair treatments - Management should handle the employee promotion decisions fairly. It is better to provide same rights and responsibilities to male and female within the organization as such same promotion practices, salary scales according to the experience and knowledge level.
· Cultural awareness - Organization should help to female workers by examining the organizational informal culture, traditions and norms that may work against women and conducting awareness program to bring to an end of those.
A conclusion can be drawn that an organization culture which supports balanced life-styles and provides support and flexibility through human resource policies and practices will better enable female employees to experience life-balance.
